Back. On. The. Air.

Finally sorted out with a brand-spaking-new internet connection, available for my serving pleasure. More updates to come.

Goodbye Ed Bradley

Normally, I wouldn't write about the passing of a journalist or celebrity, but I wanted to just make a note of the passing of CBS correspondent Ed Bradley.

His work as a journalist is well-known, but what many may not know is that Bradley was a friend of New Orleans, a jazz lover, and an annual fixture at Jazzfest, where he could frequently be seen backstage admiring the performers.

I'll miss seeing him there.

Thank you, America

Seriously, I mean it. Six years of drubbings had worn down my faith in good people, and it feels good — damn good — to win.

I don't know what's going to happen in the Senate, where a recount might affect the Montana race down the line, but as of now the results of last night's election appear near-miraculous.

I'll probably have more, deeper thoughts about this once I've had some decent sleep.

Ulcerthon 2006

Since 2000, roughly every 2 years I've found myself sitting right here, at about this time, sweating profusely, feeling the lining of my stomach waste away, watching early promising results for Democrats fade into the chronic recurring nightmare that has been American politics during the past decade.

And, so, here I sit, yet again, going gray(er), watching early promising results for Democrats.

Could it be, yet again, that the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train with Karl Rove in the cockpit? Do I dare to dream that the miracle hail-mary run-the-table scenario could come to pass? Do I believe the worst in the hopes that at some point after the sun comes up, a happy surprise will let me get some peace of mind?

I don't know what to believe anymore.

What I do know, though, is that I'll probably age about five years tonight.

***3:35AM CET*** THERE GOES THE SENATE

Webb's early exit poll lead in Virginia has now evaporated. Looks like Sen. Allen is going to pull it out. And that sucking sound you hear is blood flowing into my stomach.

***5:08AM CET*** WE GOT THE HOUSE!

Not gonna get the Senate, but finally — finally — there's a check against George W. Bush. I cannot express the relief I'm feeling right now, and who knows what difference this is going to make, but just once, finally, it feels so good to win something. Maybe there are some reasonable people back home in the States after all.

***5:56AM CET*** HOLY SHIT, WEBB JUST WENT AHEAD IN VA

99% of the vote in, Webb's ahead by 2,000. The Senate may still be in play (he said cautiously)
